Ministry warns of avian influenza outbreak in Austria

by alex

Since the end of October, cases of avian influenza (HPAI) have occurred again in wild birds, but also in domestic poultry populations in some European countries.

Cases related to autumn bird migration have been discovered in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Sweden, Ireland and the UK.

“Currently, however, outbreaks have also been reported in France, Croatia and Bavaria, so that the risk of an outbreak in Austria increases. Therefore, Austria must step up preventive measures,” said Rudolf Anschober (Greens), the Ministry of Health, on Friday. Therefore, all necessary precautions are now being taken to be able to react quickly to outbreaks in Austria.

The national reference laboratory of AGES had prepared itself for the investigation of possibly increasing samples and made a risk assessment. There is also intensive contact with the economy, especially with the poultry industry. Poultry farms are called upon to comply with and increase their organic safety measures. An avian influenza task force has been set up and is preparing initial measures.

Wild birds found dead – especially ducks and other waterfowl – should be reported to the responsible authorities immediately. Consumers and citizens do not have to worry, however: “The strain currently identified (H5N8) is not dangerous for humans and is not transmitted via food,” assures the Ministry of Health.
