Miniature chameleon robot created in Seoul
Scientists at Seoul National University have constructed a soft robot that can change colors in real time. The model is 38 cm long, 15 cm wide and weighs 0.9 kg, according to Nature Communications.
The frame of the artificial chameleon is made of plastic. Its “skin” consists of liquid crystal layers that change color depending on temperature.
Special sensors analyze the pattern and shades of the surface on which the robot moves. The silver nanowire network heats the liquid crystals so that they take on the desired color.
Scientists noted that this technology has great promise – it can be applied to flexible displays or to cover cars, so that they change color in accordance with the wishes of the owner.
According to the authors of the study, the chameleon robot will also be useful for military operations. He has excellent camouflage, much more effective than the usual camouflage.
“The ultimate form of this development will be an invisibility cloak that blends into the background,” noted Mechanical Engineer Seung Hwang Ko.
Earlier it was reported that a robot cockroach was created in the United States. It cannot be crushed.
