Migrant boat sinking in Italy: death toll rises to more than 60

The death toll from the sinking of a migrant boat off the southern Italian coast has risen to at least 63. Among the dead were eight children. Dozens more migrants seeking to reach Europe have gone missing. 80 people survived.

Authorities in the southern city of Crotone have asked relatives to provide descriptions and photographs of loved ones to help identify the dead. It is reported by the Associated Press.

UN and MSF officials said many of the victims were Afghans, Pakistanis, Syrians and Iraqis. Sixteen Pakistanis survived the shipwreck, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said.

Last year, Afghans were the second largest nationality to seek asylum in the EU, and have increasingly fled the humanitarian and economic problems that arose after being taken over by the Taliban in August 2021.

Earlier, we reported that, according to preliminary information, the ship crashed into stones due to a storm, the accident claimed dozens of lives. It is not yet known exactly where the boat went from.

A search and rescue operation is currently underway with the use of two ships, a helicopter and a car.
