From July 2020 to June 2021, most of the detected cyber attacks in the world were carried out from Russia, the American corporation Microsoft said in a new report. It follows from it that Russian hackers committed 58% of the total number of attacks. According to the company, the attacks targeted US government departments and think tanks, as well as Ukraine, Britain and European NATO members.

Microsoft analyzed data from all global attacks for the year. The total number is not indicated. It follows from the report that:

58% of attacks target Russian groups; 23% to North Korean; 11% – for Iranian; 8% for Chinese.

The effectiveness of Russian attacks was 32%. A year earlier, this indicator was at the level of 21%. The growth of the “Russian” share in Microsoft was explained by the activity of the Nobelium group, which was associated with the GRU and the SolarWinds hack. In the past year, the group has dramatically intensified its attacks on Ukraine, the report says. Their number increased from 3 to 1200. The share of government organizations among the targets of attacks increased from 3% to 53%.

The Microsoft report says that the increased efficiency of Russian government hackers “could herald more serious hacks in the future.”

“Nobelium, with its aggressive actions against IT service providers and Western government institutions, catapulted Russia to the top of the list of countries from which attacks came this year. This group is responsible for 92% of all notifications of threatening activities sent to clients from the territory of Russia, ”the report says.

A significant proportion of North Korean attacks are a reflection of the fact that they operate by brute force, while most of them do not reach the target, the corporation specified. China accounts for less than 10% of government-backed attacks. 44% of them were successful.

In 2020, Secret said that from July 2019 to June 2020, Microsoft attributed 52% of all global hacker attacks to Russia. In last year's report, the corporation also blamed Iran (25%), China (12%) and North Korea (11%) for cyberattacks.

Earlier it was reported that the banking sector and critical infrastructure in Germany were attacked by hackers from the Fancy Bear group, which is associated with Russia. According to them, the attack was a revenge for the sanctions against Moscow. Earlier, Russian hackers were suspected of hacking the US Treasury.

In June, the American IT corporation Microsoft complained about attacks by hackers from the Nobelium group, which is considered Russian. Microsoft named Nobelium responsible for hacking SolarWinds software in 2020. Users from 36 countries were affected by the new attack.
