Mexico will not impose any economic sanctions against Russia for invading Ukraine.
Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador made the announcement on Tuesday, also criticizing what he called social media censorship of Russian state media, Reuters writes.
“We are not going to accept any economic repression because we want to have good relations with all the governments in the world,” Lopez said at a press conference.
The publication notes that the political position of López Obrador contrasts with the international sanctions that Russia is facing for the military actions of President Vladimir Putin in Ukraine.
Sanctions and global financial isolation are already having a devastating effect on the Russian economy: the ruble is in free fall and Russians queue at banks.
The President of Mexico also did not agree that the Russian media are being censored.
Recall that Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro refused to condemn Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, saying that Brazil would remain neutral.
