Merkel reveals details of her conversation with Putin on Belarus

Angela Merkel

German Chancellor Angela Merkel revealed details of a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which they discussed the situation in Belarus, she is quoted by Reuters.

“I told [him] that in the issue of Belarus it is necessary to respect the country's sovereignty, people should be able to go their own way,” the chancellor stressed. According to her, she also tried to talk to the President of the Republic Alexander Lukashenko, but he did not answer the phone.

Merkel expressed the hope that law enforcement units from Russia will not be sent to Belarus. According to the German leader, the current situation in the republic differs from what happened in East Germany in 1989, since “then the USSR did not intervene in what was happening.”

This is how the chancellor reacted to Putin's statement that Moscow has formed a reserve of law enforcement officers, which, if necessary, will be used to provide assistance to the union republic. According to him, this was done at the request of Lukashenka.

The Berlin Wall was erected on August 13, 1961 and stood for almost 30 years, dividing East and West Berlin. Its length was 155 kilometers, of which more than 40 kilometers were within the city. In January-November 1990, all border structures were demolished. A fragment of the wall 1.3 kilometers long was left as a symbol of the Cold War.
