Mercury is over! That’s going to happen in the supermarkets

The Merkur supermarket chain becomes part of the Billa family! What new names will the branches be given and what will change for customers from April.

A bang at Merkur! According to “Today” information, the Austrian supermarket chain, which belongs to the German Rewe group and has been operated by Billa AG since August 2020, will be part of the Billa family. From April the branches will be renamed “Billa Plus”.

“Two strong sales formats that have been successful for decades are now moving even closer together, are able to support each other even better and are able to act in a more targeted manner in the offerings for our customers”, it says in an internal letter to the employees.

Customers would want “precise shopping experiences”, the right prices for them, exactly the selection and the service they need for their very individual groceries – and that “always, immediately, in the store as well as online”, it says.

But what exactly will change from April? In addition to a new name (“Billa Plus”) and a new brand, the branches will also be given a new color and packaging. Employee clothing will also change. The principle remains the same, green parts turn yellow as with Billa.

The range of services and the “Merkur experience” will continue to exist and will even be expanded. However, the cooperation is to become even closer and the exchange even more intensive, for example in the case of mutual temporary help when staff is needed.

Merkur and Billa Plus will continue to rely on a “strong and clear price and promotion policy” and on “understandable and attractive discounts” in the future. In addition, they want to fall back on regional products even more and combine the “best of our worlds”, such as with a wider range of organic products.
