Brackley. Mercedes-F1 confirms its driver pairing for the 2022 season. After Valtteri Bottas switched to Alfa Romeo Racing, Lewis Hamilton will have a new team-mate in 2022 with George Russell. Valtteri Bottas had previously announced that he would join Alfa Romeo next year after five highly successful seasons with Mercedes.
Valtteri's successor will be the 23-year-old Briton George Russell, who has been part of the Mercedes Junior Program since 2017. In the same year, George won the GP2 series before becoming the FIA Formula 2 champion a year later. In 2019 he joined Williams in Formula 1, where he impressed with his work ethic and performance during his three years with the team. Now he is ready to make the leap to Mercedes where, after signing a long-term contract, he will usher in the next phase of his career alongside Lewis Hamilton.
Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda will again form the driver duo for the Alpha Tauri Formula 1 team in the coming season. This was announced by the Red Bull sister team on Tuesday before the Italian Grand Prix. The 25-year-old Frenchman Gasly had sensationally won the race in Monza last year, has been driving in Formula 1 since 2017 and is currently eighth in the World Championship. The Japanese Tsunoda (21) is contesting his debut season, he is 13th overall.
