In rural Nigeria, people are still often killed because of accusations of witchcraft.
In Nigeria five men have been sentenced to death for the murder of a woman they committed in 2023 after she was suspected of witchcraft.
This is reported by BBC.
Journalists write that this is not the first such case, but for the first time, 5 people who killed a woman on suspicion of witchcraft were sentenced to death.
It is reported that the men attacked 67-year-old Dahara Abubakar while she was working in her garden. The woman was beaten and stabbed to death.
After the murder, the victim's family contacted law enforcement officers, who quickly arrested the suspects.
Journalists reported that the men decided to kill the woman only because the wife of one of them dreamed of the victim chasing her with a knife in her hands. After his wife's story, the husband gathered a group that committed the murder.
The case received wide publicity in Nigeria, where people are still often killed in rural areas due to accusations of witchcraft. Often, those making such accusations are convinced, without evidence, that their victims are responsible for the death or illness of their loved ones.
The death penalty is rarely used in Nigeria, with those sentenced to death typically spending the rest of their lives behind bars.
Earlier, five people were reported to have been found dead in Edo, Nigeria, after a woman poisoned them with pepper soup.
We previously reported that 29 children in Nigeria may be executed for participating in a protest against rising food prices life.
