Putin's ally believes that Ukraine “has no right” to join not only NATO, but also the EU.
Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev, who acts as the Kremlin's main mouthpiece on social media, said that the European Union has become Russia's enemy. According to him, the EU poses a “direct threat” to the aggressor state.
The statement by Putin's loyal henchman is quoted by Reuters.
Medvedev believes that the EU has transformed from an economic bloc “into a politicized anti-Russian organization that is gradually turning into a military bloc.”
“Today, Brussels is a real enemy of Russia. In its current distorted form, the European Union poses no less a threat to us than the North Atlantic Alliance,” Dmitry Medvedev wrote on Telegram.
Developing this idea, the official of the aggressor state added that Ukraine “has no right” to join not only NATO, but also the EU.
“The European Union, stuffed with weapons, is a direct threat to Russia. That is how it should be treated, at least until it changes its approach to us. That is why the so-called idea of Ukraine in the EU is a danger to our country,” the Kremlin mouthpiece emphasized.
Previously, Russia was categorically against Ukraine joining NATO, calling it a reason for a full-scale invasion in February 2022. At the same time, Moscow did not openly express any claims regarding the prospect of Ukraine's membership in the EU.
In contrast, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in June 2022 that he had “nothing against” such a possibility, and in February of this year the Kremlin even declared that Ukraine had a sovereign right to join the European Union.
Shortly after the outbreak of a full-scale war with Russia in 2022, Ukraine applied for EU membership and received official candidate country status in the summer of that year.
Let us recall that the head of diplomacy of the European Union, Kaja Kallas, believes that further support for Ukraine is necessary for the security of the EU.
