Dmitry Medvedev: US missiles may appear in Ukraine without its joining NATO

For Russia, the main danger of Ukraine’s accession to NATO is that Western military bases and new types of strike weapons may appear right on the very border of the country. At the same time, this scenario is possible without the former Soviet republic joining the bloc, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said in an interview with leading Russian media, including
“It is possible not to invite Ukraine to NATO at all. Moreover, they periodically whisper in our ear that Ukraine will not join NATO in the coming years and will not join at all. But that’s not the question. It is possible, on the basis of bilateral agreements, to deliver the same types of shock weapons, the same missiles, to the territory of Ukraine or any other country,” he said.
At the same time, Moscow understands that if this happens, it will essentially happen under the auspices of the North Atlantic Alliance, in which the United States has a “controlling stake”.
Medvedev stressed that the proposals formulated by Moscow on security guarantees are aimed at “eliminating those obvious threats that have formed at the moment.”
“That is why they are extremely specific and should be fixed in one way or another, if our partners meet us halfway in this case, in some document that should be binding,” the former president of Russia noted.
