Medical care from Maradona was inadequate

Diego Maradona's death is under further investigation

A good five months after Diego Maradona's death, a commission of experts has made serious allegations against the doctors and nurses of the Argentine football legend. “The behavior of Diego Armando Maradona's medical team was inadequate, inadequate and inconsiderate. The patient was left to his fate,” the newspaper “La Nación” quoted on Friday from a report by the medical commission on the star's last days.

Although it cannot be said with certainty that he would not have died with better medical care, at least he would have had a better chance of survival, the report said. Maradona died of a heart attack on November 25, 2020 at the age of only 60 in a private residential complex north of Buenos Aires. The prosecution is investigating at least seven members of the medical team for negligent homicide. Among the suspects are Maradona's personal physician Leopoldo Luque, his psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov and several nurses.

Maradona had been released from hospital two weeks before his death, where he had undergone brain surgery. Apparently he refused the constant care by nurses in the rented house. However, complications occurred during the rehabilitation phase, as can be seen from the chat logs published by the carers in the local media.

“The nursing care was characterized by deficiencies and irregularities,” said the experts' report. “Maradona was not properly monitored and supported by the medical, nursing and therapeutic staff, neither in time nor in the form, in accordance with the rules of good practice. There is no indication of psychological care at home.”
