Google search executives are in talks with colleagues at Facebook and ByteDance over videos posted to Instagram and TikTok, respectively, The Information reports, citing three sources. According to them, Google intends to obtain data that would allow indexing videos of competing services and ranking them in the search.
The terms of the discussed agreement were not disclosed. The publication notes that Google's existing agreement with Twitter provides for payments to the social network. A Google spokesperson told The Information that the company is negotiating search results as usual.
Google in 2020 added the ability to YouTube to post short vertical videos like those found on TikTok or Instagram Reels. Late last year, the company tested the display of short-format videos in a carousel on a search results page, the industry publication Search Engine Roundtable reported.
The function of short vertical videos has been present on the VKontakte social network since last year. The day before, Gazprom-Media CEO Alexander Zharov announced that the holding had launched its short video platform in late November and early December. At the end of last year, the holding bought out the rights to the application “Ya Molodets”, developed with the support of the Innopraktika Foundation.
