Media: dangerous schoolchildren want to calculate by essays using AI
It is planned to allocate 1.7 billion rubles from the state budget to create software for analyzing the written works of Russian schoolchildren in order to identify students with tendencies to socially dangerous and destructive behavior. From the budget of the national project “Education” in 2022–2023. 551.1 million annually will be allocated for the development of this software, in 2024 – 555.7 million rubles. The press service of the government of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Education and Rosmolodezh did not respond to the request of the publication. The State Duma believes that the impetus for the creation of a project to develop this technology was the increased incidence of violence in educational institutions, including the recent armed attack on Perm State University and the shooting in Kazan gymnasium in May.
Child psychiatrists interviewed by the newspaper stated that they were not aware of the existence of evidence-based software for the psychological analysis of written works. Experts note that the analysis will be effective only if we are talking about texts on a free topic, in addition, the consent of the test taker or his parents is required for the study and any subsequent actions.
The experts also said that technical tools for determining the level of stress and the presence of propensities are used to analyze large groups of people and big data, for example, essays over several years, so they doubt that creating such software makes sense.
In turn, lawyers fear that such a selection may have unpredictable consequences: the attitude towards the child on the part of the teacher and parents will worsen, and the student himself will be registered in a mental hospital. In addition, changes in legislation will be required for such a software product to be usable.
