The core bit and hammer drill on the Perseverance rover worked as expected, but the container for the collected material was empty, NASA explained. Experts admit rock shift while drilling.
The result of drilling on the surface of Mars
The first attempt by the Perseverance rover to take soil from the planet's surface ended in failure. The data transmitted by the vehicle to Earth shows that the core bit and hammer drill worked as expected, but there was no material in the sample container, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said on Friday, Aug. 6.
#SamplingMars is one of my most complicated tasks. Early pics and data show a successful drill hole, but no sample in the tube – something we've never seen in testing on Earth. Mars keeps surprising us. We're working through this new challenge. More to come. https://t.co/XyXBssvKe6 pic.twitter.com/VTNvMA2jqN

The mission team admits that the cause is more likely to be due to shear during drilling, rather than equipment malfunction. NASA specialists in the coming days will study the data obtained and conduct additional diagnostics.
The Perseverance spacecraft successfully landed on the surface of Mars at the Jezero crater on 18 February. As part of NASA's Mars 2020 mission, it will look for water and signs of life below the planet's surface, and collect rocks and soil samples. It is expected that the containers with the received material will be delivered to Earth within the next 10 years. NASA during the mission conducted a series of flights of the Earth-controlled vehicle Ingenuity (“Ingenuity”)
