Markarov on the threat of an attack by the Russian Federation: We are working on diplomatic deterrence, but there is “option B”

The United States of America and Ukraine are now working on a diplomatic option to contain Russia from further aggression and possible invasion.

Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Oksana Markarova told about this in an interview. At the same time, according to her, the West is clearly aware of the threats, and therefore they are preparing for & # 8220; Option B & # 8221 ;.

– Now we are all: Ukraine, the USA, the West – we are working on option & # 8220; A & # 8221;, diplomatic containment, so that we do not have to switch to option & # 8220; B & # 8221;, for which everyone is also actively preparing, & # 8212; Markarova emphasized.

The diplomat did not specify what exactly the & # 8220; option B & # 8221; will envisage, however, we are talking about the situation of a potential full-scale Russian attack on Ukraine.

Markarova also listed three components of the US diplomatic containment strategy:

1. Firstly, these are political signals that are being heard from Washington. According to the ambassador, the United States clearly demonstrates to Russia its unshakable support for the independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, despite the ultimatums.

– The American administration is now actively working to unite the transatlantic community in the face of the threat of a new wave of Russian aggression against Ukraine, – clarified Markarova.

2. The second component is the threat of powerful new economic sanctions against the Russian Federation. The diplomat recalled that American leader Joe Biden made it clear to Vladimir Putin that the price of escalation would be very high and the economic consequences for Russia would be very grave.

3. The third component is development of the defense and economic capacities of Ukraine, the provision of assistance to our state, including lethal weapons.

Markarova noted that Washington is now actively turning to Moscow in order to focus on a diplomatic settlement of the situation (& # 8220; option A & # 8221;). At the same time, according to her, the United States is aware of the threat to the sovereignty of Ukraine and is not ready to sacrifice it.

– They really strive for a diplomatic settlement and demonstrate to Russia that there is another way. For the United States and the entire civilized world, war is not a desirable scenario for the development of events. At the same time, there is an understanding that there is a threat to Ukrainian sovereignty, and the United States is not ready to sacrifice it, & # 8212; Markarova said.

Recently, US Vice President Kamala Harris announced that Washington would impose unprecedented sanctions against Russia in the event of its invasion of Ukraine. She stressed that the consequences of a possible new aggression are being explained to the Kremlin.

American leader Joe Biden made similar statements earlier. He warned Vladimir Putin about the devastating economic and image consequences for Russia in the event of an attack on Ukraine.

The European Union also warned the Kremlin about large-scale sanctions. According to the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, they have already been prepared.
