But then the video referee intervened. BVB kicker Emre Can first touched the ball with his head in minute 52, then got it to the outstretched left upper arm. According to the rules, this is not a criminal offense. The referees saw it differently, decided on penalties. City striker Riyad Mahrez made it 1-1. The fate of Dortmund took its course.
The controversial penalty kick also heated tempers after the final whistle. “We were told clearly that it is not a handball if you behead yourself”, Dortmund coach Edin Terzic shook his head at “Sky”. “Manchester City deserved to get through.
