Scientists said that people began to trust computers more than their own kind when making day-to-day decisions.
Briefly about the research of scientists from the University of Georgia tells Naked Science. According to the authors, people's trust in computers is especially growing when it comes to complex and voluminous tasks.
During the experiment, scientists asked 1,500 participants to count the number of people in a photograph. Also, people compared phrases about the problem, said by people and generated by the algorithm. As the number of people in the photograph grew, it became more difficult to count them. And then the participants were more likely to agree with the phrases of the algorithm. They also became more skeptical about other people's calculations.
Scientists have concluded that people tend to rely on computers as the task gets more complex, and “this is stronger than relying on other people.”
