The Spanish government has quarantined Madrid due to the worsening coronavirus situation. This is reported by The Guardian with reference to the country's Ministry of Health.

“The health of Madrid is the health of Spain. Madrid is a special city, ”said the Spanish Minister of Health, Salvador Ilya. Greater Madrid accounts for more than a third of the detected COVID-19 cases in the past two weeks, writes BBC News.

Residents of the capital will be allowed to leave it only for a few reasons, including work. It is also known that bars and restaurants will shorten their opening hours, and gatherings of more than six people will be prohibited in public places. It is noted that the central authorities took over the municipal authorities in the discussion about the necessary quarantine measures – they were able to push through a tougher option.

In Spain, since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, almost 749 thousand people have been infected, more than 31 thousand have died. In the spring, the authorities introduced a strict quarantine, which was subsequently lifted. However, recently, due to the increase in the number of cases of the disease in various regions, restrictive measures are being introduced again.
