Researchers in China have developed the world's hardest glass, which can easily leave a deep scratch on the surface of a diamond.
AM-III is a transparent material made entirely of carbon. It scored 113 gigapascals in the Vickers hardness test. For comparison: natural diamond usually gets from 50 to 70, and some artificial stones – up to 100 GPa.
Of course, it is still far from the mass production of new glass products. However, a bulletproof window made from AM-III can be 20 to 100 times stronger than some modern products.
In addition, AM-III is a semiconductor that is almost as efficient as silicon. Thanks to this, the material can be used in photovoltaic devices.
