Made an ultimatum to Putin: what makes Merz delay the transfer of Taurus missiles

Key points

  • Ukraine has not yet received Taurus missiles from Germany. Chancellor Friedrich Merz said in his election campaign that he would give Ukraine these weapons.
  • German political scientist Sergei Sumlenny explained why our country has not yet received Taurus missiles.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has not transferred Taurus missiles to Ukraine, but he does not rule out such a possibility. At the same time, before the elections, he supported the idea of the Ukrainian Armed Forces receiving these weapons.

German political scientist Sergei Sumlenny told Channel 24 about this, noting that in his election promises, Merz literally said that he would give Ukraine Taurus missiles. In his statements, he gave Putin an ultimatum: if he continues to bomb civilian objects in our country, the Ukrainian Armed Forces will receive these missiles. If Russia continues its attacks after this, Germany will lift any restrictions on the use of Taurus.

Why Ukraine Hasn't Received Taurus Yet

As Sumlenny noted, Russia continues to shell Ukraine. At the same time, Merz has not handed over the Taurus missiles. It is obvious that he is under pressure from the Social Democrats, who formed a coalition with the CDU/CSU. They rejected the option of handing over these missiles to Ukraine.

It is possible that there are forces in the CDU/CSU that support not a reduction in aid to Ukraine, but what they call a limitation of the escalation potential with Russia. They believe that such a transfer will lead to escalation, noted Sumlenny.

In Germany, the construction “if Germany hands over this – it will be drawn into the war” is constantly being thrown out. In particular, this is done by former Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Merz has repeatedly refuted these statements. After all, the transferred weapons are used by Ukraine, not Germany.

This is a German tradition. Instead of taking action, discussing possible consequences. Unfortunately, despite all of Merz's healthier rhetoric, the conversation is again about rhetoric. Wars are not won by rhetoric without real action. Unfortunately, the Merz government is almost as afraid as the Scholz government, Sumlenny noted.

There are some positive aspects, however. Germany is ready to finance the production of long-range drones that Ukraine uses against Russia.
