Incumbent French President Emmanuel Macron has a good chance of winning the upcoming elections in April. This is how Vera Ageeva, Deputy Head of the Department of Political Science and International Relations of the National Research University Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg, assessed the prospects in a conversation with Lenta.ru.
The political scientist noted that the French were generally satisfied with the way Macron handled the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. According to her, despite the criticism, most of the population of the Fifth Republic positively assesses his activities. “In French culture, it is customary to criticize the authorities, even if the politician is viewed positively. The French consider this a healthy tool to prevent the elites from switching to non-democratic practices,” Ageyeva said.
At the same time, the scientist emphasized that Macron has strong rivals in the electoral race. In particular, we are talking about the Republican candidate Valerie Pekress, whose support ratings are growing. According to Ageyeva, if she goes with the incumbent president to the second round of elections, the result could be unpredictable.
Earlier, BFM TV reported that Macron became the leader of public opinion polls and remained the main favorite in the upcoming presidential elections. Less than three months before the first round, almost every second Frenchman named a politician the winner of the race, according to a poll conducted by the TV channel. This opinion is shared by 48 percent of respondents.
