French President Emmanuel Macron feared the outcome of the 2022 presidential election and predicted attempts to influence the outcome. He is quoted by Bloomberg.
In his opinion, Turkey can first of all take advantage of this opportunity. “There will be attempts to interfere in the next elections. And [Ankara's] threats are not veiled, ”Macron said.
At the same time, the French leader said that he noted the desire of his Turkish colleague Recep Tayyip Erdogan to restore relations. At the same time, Macron himself believes that this will not work if there is “ambiguity” between the countries: in particular, if Ankara is acting “behind the back” of Paris.
In early March, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian also praised Turkey for refusing to insult the EU and France, but admitted that “Ankara still has a lot of work to do.” In his opinion, relations between the European and Turkish sides will remain fragile until the latter takes concrete action.
