French President Emmanuel Macron discussed the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. He held talks via video link on Thursday, November 19, according to the website of the Elysee Palace.
During the talks, Macron announced his desire to take measures to protect the religious and cultural heritage of Karabakh.
“The President of the Republic discussed with them the priorities of France after the ceasefire on 9 November. The end of hostilities should allow the resumption of good faith negotiations to protect the population of Nagorno-Karabakh and ensure the return of tens of thousands of people who left their homes in recent weeks, in safety, ”the communiqué said.
The French leader also recalled France's efforts to provide humanitarian assistance.
Earlier, France wanted to recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh. The French Senate will consider a resolution calling on the country's authorities to recognize the independence of the NKR.
On November 9, the leaders of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan adopted a joint statement suggesting an end to hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh from November 10. The parties to the conflict stop at their positions. Azerbaijan will gain control over the territories of Aghdam, Gazakh, Kelbajar and Lachin regions. The region will include Russian peacekeepers. The units will be deployed along the line of contact and the Lachin corridor, which connects Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia.
