France has confirmed the participation of militants from Syria in the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. This was stated by President Emmanuel Macron, quoted by RIA Novosti.

“The situation in Karabakh is difficult (…), we have reliable information according to which the militants of the jihadist groups left Syria to join the armed actions in Karabakh,” he said.

According to Macron, this is a new and very serious factor complicating the situation. He promised to discuss the problem in negotiations with EU members.

Earlier, the presidents of Russia, France and the United States made a joint statement on the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, in which they called on the parties to the conflict to immediately end hostilities. In a statement they condemned “the escalation of violence taking place on the line of contact in the zone of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.” The leaders of the three countries called on the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan to resume negotiations to resolve the situation with the assistance of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs. The parties also expressed condolences to the families of those killed and wounded.

The fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) began on September 27. Azerbaijan accused the Armenian military of shelling its positions, while Armenia accuses the Azerbaijani military of attacking Artsakh.
