Macron Appoints Oldest Prime Minister in Modern French History: What is Known About Michel Barnier

The French president asked the newly appointed prime minister to “form a unity government”.

French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed 73-year-old conservative politician Michel Barnier, representing the center-right party Les Républicains, as the new prime minister. He became the oldest head of government in the history of modern France.

This was reported on Thursday, September 5, by Le Figaro.

During his political career, Michel Barnier was an MP, a European Commissioner, and also headed the European Union negotiating group on Britain's exit from the EU.

The French presidential administration reported that Macron was convinced that Barnier met the conditions for stability and the broadest possible consensus, and asked him to “form a unity government that will serve the country.”

French media write that the main challenge of the new prime minister will be to assemble a team capable of finding compromises and forming coalition.

Earlier, Emmanuel Macron refused to appoint Lucie Castet, the candidate from the left-wing bloc “New Popular Front”, who won the elections, as head of government. He began consultations with other political forces.

Recall that on July 8, during the second round of early parliamentary elections in France, the far-right political force of Marine Le Pen, who is called a fan of Putin, lost the lead, and the majority of French people cast their votes for the Union of Left Forces and the party of President Macron.
