In particular, Macron said that even France and Germany, mortal enemies, were forced to make peace after World War II.
French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, at a trilateral meeting in Paris in February 2023, called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to negotiate peace with Russia.
This is reported by The Wall Street Journal, citing sources of the publication.
The material says that during a joint dinner at the Elysee Palace Macron spoke with a more sober message, according to sources. Addressing Zelensky, he said that even mortal enemies like France and Germany should have made peace after World War II.
At the same time, the French president told his Ukrainian counterpart that he was a great military leader, but in the end, he will be forced to move into political state activity and make difficult decisions.
The publication recalls that during his speech after the Munich Security Conference, Macron expressed public doubts that Ukraine or Russia would be able to achieve their goals at the front. The politician said that neither side could win a military victory.
“Now we need Ukraine to launch a military offensive that will push back the Russian front to open the way for a return to negotiations,” said the President of France.
And Zelensky, in turn, said that he had repeatedly called on world leaders to put pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to meet with him before the invasion, but he refused.
“The atrocities committed by Russia over the past year , make such negotiations impossible. Now we cannot do this. There is nothing and no one to talk about,” the Ukrainian president emphasized.
Recall that at a press conference on February 24, Zelensky said that he simply “does not think theoretically” about negotiations with Russia to end the war. He recalled that for this purpose there is a peace formula proposed by him at the G20 summit.
The President of Ukraine also ruled out the possibility of sitting at the negotiating table with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Turkey, commenting on the corresponding initiative of Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan.< /p>
