Oppositionists believe that with the help of the referendum, Lukashenka will receive lifelong immunity from prosecution, as well as strengthen his power
The democratic forces of Belarus have drawn up a joint appeal in connection with the referendum announced by Alexander Lukashenko. This appeal is addressed to the EU, the USA, the UK and the OSCE.
It was signed by Tikhanovskaya’s Office, the Coordinating Council, and the People’s Anti-Crisis Management.
Belarusian oppositionists call on Western countries and international organizations to officially declare the non-recognition of Lukashenka’s right to hold a referendum. “This will deprive the referendum of any political and legal significance, will cancel the regime’s plans to restore the lost legitimacy,” the report says.
Oppositionists believe that with the help of the referendum, Lukashenka will receive lifelong immunity from prosecution, as well as strengthen his power through the creation of a new body with virtually unlimited powers –The All-Belarusian People’s Assembly.
“Among the proposed amendments is a demonstrative refusal from Belarus’ desire for neutrality and a nuclear-free status – positions that enjoy broad support of Belarusians,” the appeal says
Belarusian oppositionists are calling on the West to announce further sanctions against the Lukashenka regime if repressions against opponents of this referendum continue.
They also talk about the need to release political prisoners and hold new early presidential elections under international supervision.
Recall thatAlexander Lukashenko has set a date for holding a referendum on amendments and additions to the Constitution of Belarus.
Earlier, he stated about the likelihood of holding early presidential elections. However, this can happen only after amendments to the Belarusian constitution.
