Self-proclaimed President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has ordered the release from prison of one of the country's most famous opposition figures, Sergei Tikhanovsky.

This was reported by the publication Nasha Niva.

It is claimed that the release became possible thanks to the visit to Minsk of US President Donald Trump's special representative, Keith Kellogg.

According to the publication, Tikhanovsky has already left Belarus. Other details are not disclosed.

Who is Sergei Tikhanovsky?

Video blogger Sergei Tikhanovsky sharply criticized Lukashenko’s regime in Belarus on his YouTube channel “Country for Life”.

He intended to run in the 2020 presidential elections, but was detained at one of the pre-election pickets after being provoked by security forces.

Lukashenko publicly admitted that he personally ordered Tikhanovsky's detention, accusing him of attempting to organize a Maidan in Belarus.

In December 2021, Tikhanovsky was sentenced to 18 years in a maximum-security penal colony on political charges, including organizing mass riots, inciting social hatred, and obstructing the work of the Central Election Commission. The term was later increased by another year and a half. He did not admit his guilt.

His wife Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who ran against Lukashenko in the election after her husband's arrest and became the leader of the Belarusian opposition, received an anonymous message in July 2023 about the alleged death of her husband Sergei in prison. This information was not confirmed.

Recall that on June 21, US Presidential Special Representative Keith Kellogg met with Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko in Minsk
