British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab criticized the secret inauguration of President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, held in Minsk on Wednesday, September 23. He expressed this position on his Twitter account.
According to Raab, the inauguration of Lukashenka “further undermines his reputation.” “His rigged elections were a deception of the Belarusian people,” the head of the British Foreign Office wrote.
Slovakia was the first EU country to refuse to consider Alexander Lukashenko as the legitimate president of Belarus. Also, the representative of the German Cabinet of Ministers Steffen Seibert said that Lukashenka cannot count on democratic legitimacy. After that, the USA, Ukraine and Canada expressed a similar opinion.
The inauguration of Alexander Lukashenko took place at the Palace of Independence in Minsk on September 23. The ceremony was not broadcast on TV channels, the authorities hid its date until recently.
According to the Central Election Commission, Lukashenka won the presidential election on August 9 with 80 percent of the vote. In Belarus, for the seventh week, there have been mass protests of citizens who disagree with the official voting results.
