Loos days in the Czech Republic

Anyone looking for traces of the famous modernist architect Adolf Loos should go on a tour from Brno via Prague to Pilsen.

Pilsen: The interior of Villa Brummel at Husova 58, which was completed in 1929.

He was born in Brno 150 years ago, on December 10, 1870. This is where the journey to his masterpieces in the Czech Republic should begin, where Loos designed thirty buildings and apartments. The starting point is the new Adolf Loos monument, which is roughly where Loos' birthplace originally stood – his father's workshop, a stonemason and sculptor. On to the Bauer-Schlösschen with the most important interior by Loos. It is the only publicly accessible, preserved work by the architect in his hometown.

I force homeowners to live in the whole apartment, not just in the kitchen.

“I force homeowners to live in the whole apartment, not just in the kitchen,” said the modernist. His architectural style and room plan concept were revolutionary at the time: the focus is on the function of a room. Ornaments and decorations are dispensed with. The exterior is classic, minimalist – like a cube. A special feature is the three-dimensional way of thinking, the rooms are on different levels and have different ceiling heights. Nevertheless, the houses and apartments are comfortable and elegant thanks to the finest materials. To find the right stone for his wall cladding, Loos traveled all over Europe. Because he traveled tirelessly, he knew a lot about different cultures. That was his lifestyle, always traveling between Paris, Greece and Italy. There he was inspired, found new materials and internalized the colors of the houses in the Mediterranean area.

Villa Müller, a simple cube, completed in 1930, offers one of the most beautiful interiors in Prague, including furniture designed by Loos. The villa is almost completely preserved and has been restored as a museum. The Villa Winternitz in Prague, the last building designed by Loos, is also worth seeing.

Prague: The Villa Winternitz is the last building that Loos was able to realize before his death in 1933.

If you want to follow in Loos' footsteps in Pilsen, where your third wife came from, you can choose from various sightseeing routes. You can discover the Kraus couple's former apartment with its breathtaking mahogany ceiling and mirrored walls, the salon and dining room in Dr. Vogl, the spacious two-generation apartment in the Brummel House or part of the Semler residence, in which many of the furniture is still in its original condition.
