London court refused to release Julian Assange on bail
Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has not been released on bail by the Westminster Magistrates' Court in London. He will remain in jail pending a US appeal for his extradition. There is a possibility that this procedure could take many months, RIA Novosti reports.
The reason for the refusal is that he had previously violated the terms and conditions of bail. The court refused all the previous petitions of lawyers on the same grounds.
We will remind, Julian Assange was accused in Sweden in 2010 of sexual harassment and rape. Since 2012, he has been hiding at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, fearing extradition. In 2019, he was detained at the request of the United States. Since that time, Assange has been held in the Belmarsh maximum security prison. Soon, the American roots brought new charges against Assange in 17 episodes of violation of the law on espionage and the disclosure of classified information. If extradited, he faces up to 175 years in prison.
