The British government is ready to postpone the lifting of the coronavirus lockdown if the country's disease rates worsen. This is reported by the Daily Mail, citing a statement from Health Secretary Matt Hancock.
The British authorities planned to lift a significant part of the restrictions on June 21. In society, this date has already been called “the day of freedom.” However, Hancock said it could be rescheduled if data on new COVID-19 cases next week “turns out to be bad.”
It is proposed to postpone the cancellation of the lockdown for two weeks – to July 5. This will allow more Britons to receive a second dose of the coronavirus vaccine, according to authorities.
Hancock noted that the Cabinet of Ministers will carefully study the statistics on COVID-19 for the next week and will make a final decision on June 14. “We are absolutely ready to do this, if this is what is needed,” the minister answered when asked about his readiness to postpone the “day of freedom”.
A hard lockdown in the UK was introduced in January in response to the spread of new strains of coronavirus in the country. The government has developed a four-phase plan to remove the restrictions.
The first stage was in March, when educational institutions were allowed to work and no more than two people were allowed to meet in parks. In April, the second stage began, when pubs and service establishments were opened, children's activities were allowed in the premises, and the maximum allowed companies for adults were increased to six people.
On May 17, the third stage of lifting restrictions began – hotels, theaters, museums were opened, sports events with spectators were allowed, universities returned to full-time education, and citizens were allowed to travel abroad with some reservations.

June 1 was the first day in the UK since March last year, when not a single death from coronavirus was recorded in a day. A former senior adviser to Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that London made three mistakes in the fight against the pandemic: it was belatedly responding to the spread of the disease, it was unable to achieve clear interaction between government agencies, and it also did not create a quality case tracking system.
