Lockdown extension: Football championships in Lower Austria ended

by alex

With the lockdown extension, the Lower Austrian Association ended the season prematurely. Again there are no promoters and relegators.

And another season ends disappointingly for all concerned. Due to the lockdown extension in Lower Austria (at least until May 2nd), the Lower Austria Association has decided to end all current championships.

Just like a year ago, there are neither relegators nor promoters. For that, at least every team in a league would have had to play against every competitor once. That didn't work out until the lockdown. Close in some leagues, but a few more rounds would have been missing in most.

Decision “official”

“Due to the extension of the lockdown in Lower Austria, the 2020/21 game year must be ended prematurely for the teams in the adult division (without promoted and relegated teams)”, the association reported as “official”.

Hundreds of clubs and thousands of amateur footballers are affected by this decision, which officials consider to be inevitable. The warnings that Corona could lead to a second season without any sporting consequences have now arrived. Alternative models to at least reward the respective championship leaders were rejected.

No more waiting

The reason for the stop is a decision from March to wait until April 18 at the latest. “In March, the NÖFV board made this decision with great foresight. In our currently unpredictable time, we wanted to give the clubs, coaches and all active people the greatest possible planning security, ”explains NÖFV President Johann Gartner.

“Due to the decision made by the politically responsible, no training is possible until April 18th. This restriction is therefore synonymous with the premature end of the season for all combat teams for women and men as well as for the reserve competitions. “

Only youth games could still be held before the obligatory summer break – if the pandemic allows.
