For the first time, Anfield Road was sold out with 52,000 fans. Coach Klopp was also pleased.
The return of the fans to the stadium on Anfield Road was something special for Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp. “Exceptional, great,” he said on Sunday on Bild TV about the atmosphere during his team's 2-0 win against Burnley FC in the Premier League. “We haven't had that for so long. I think it was 529 days with us. And of course that is an extremely long time. I would never have thought that I would have to do without it for so long.”
Unlike in the German Bundesliga stadiums, the stadium in Liverpool was sold out with more than 52,000 fans for the first time since the beginning of the corona pandemic on Saturday afternoon. Klopp's family and advisor were among the audience. “You can say that yesterday we were all extremely emotional with the whole story,” reported the 54-year-old. “There were moments when it was extremely difficult to hold back tears.”
The salt and the soup
It was just football, he emphasized. But there is “obviously so much pathos, so much emotionality in here. There was already the moment when you say: Oh, my God, that's special,” said Klopp. “It's not just the salt in the soup, but the soup too.” Against Burnley it was the best atmosphere “that we have ever had at a 12.30 kick-off”.
He hopes that the corona situation will “hopefully normalize step by step throughout England, Europe, and worldwide, and that such images will not only be seen from English stadiums”.
