In China, a 55-year-old man tried to commit suicide out of shame that his 29-year-old son has not yet married.
According to the local edition of Knowws, on January 22, a 55-year-old man handed a note to the guards at the Shanghai railway station and said that he had just taken a large dose of medicine. After that, he lost consciousness on the spot.
In a note addressed to his son, the man wrote that he had “lived a shameful life” because his son had not yet created a family.
– People of my age already have grandchildren in the village. But you are 29 years old and you have achieved nothing–” he wrote.
The man was taken to the hospital in time and rescued. This case has sparked discussion on social media due to pressure on young people in China to get married on time.
In China, it is customary to get married before the age of 30. Often parents push their children to do this by arranging a blind date for them.
If young women do not get married before the age of 27, they are called shen nu or abandoned women. In 2021, China conducted a survey in which almost half of young women said they did not intend to start a family.
As for young men, they are forced to start a family as soon as possible, because from them“they are waiting for the continuation of the family family.” At the National University of Singapore, sociology experts note that in China, marriage is also a marker of social maturation and personal success.
