Lightning strikes plane before takeoff from airport – video

According to meteorologists, airplanes are struck by lightning only once or twice a year.

In Sao Paulo, Brazil, lightning struck a plane while it was parked at the airport. This comes after lightning struck a Wizz Air plane twice in Georgia last year.

A British Airways passenger was waiting for his flight home on Friday, January 24, when lightning struck the plane he was supposed to fly home on, Fox Weather reports.

A “massive storm” was approaching and was delaying flights like his, according to Bernhard Warr. The traveller saw a video opportunity and captured the moment of impact. The video shows lightning striking the plane as it was parked at the gate.

“When we looked out the window, we could see lightning striking near the airport, and I went to take some pictures, thinking it would be nice if our plane was in the shot,” he said. “I was lucky and it hit right in front of me!”

According to the National Weather Service, commercial aircraft like the one in the video are struck by lightning on average only once or twice a year. They noted that planes are designed and built to withstand lightning strikes. However, after the strike, the planes undergo mandatory inspection, which can delay flights.

Recall that a man was struck twice by lightning while fishing. He puzzled with his reaction.
