Motorcycle superstar Valentino Rossi announced his retirement at the end of the season on Thursday in Austria. The 42-year-old Italian, who is in his 26th World Championship season, is a nine-time motorcycle world champion and has so far contested 423 Grand Prix races across all classes and won 115 of them. Most recently, however, the “old master” with the famous starting number 46 did not work anymore, Rossi is currently only in 19th place in the World Championship.
The current Yamaha rider is nicknamed “The Doctor” and is one of the most famous athletes in the world. “The end of the season is over. It's a very sad moment,” said Rossi at the press conference before the Styrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, which ended a five-week break from racing.
Recently there had been rumors that the Italian could start in the World Cup in 2022 with his own Ducati team and together with his half-brother Luca Marini. But it doesn't come to that now. In 1996 Rossi contested his first race, with Valencia on November 14th is now the end of the World Cup. Rossi wants to drive more car races in the future.
