Russia counts on the peaceful settlement of the situation in Armenia. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov shared these wishes in a telephone conversation with his Armenian counterpart Ara Ayvazyan, the Russian Foreign Ministry reports on the official website.
It is reported that the Armenian Foreign Minister informed Lavrov about the latest developments in the country. In turn, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that the events in Armenia are an “internal affair” of the country, and called a peaceful settlement of the situation desirable. It is specified that the telephone conversation took place earlier on Thursday, February 25.
Earlier, the Armenian Armed Forces demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and his government. A special statement of the General Staff was signed by all the leadership, including Chief Onik Gasparyan, as well as the commanders of large military formations and the heads of all departments. Following this, Pashinyan dismissed Gasparyan and called the incident an attempt at a military coup.
Protests demanding Pashinyan to leave his post have continued in Armenia since the end of the military conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. The opposition forces accuse the prime minister of betraying the national interests of the country; they have created a political movement “For the salvation of the homeland”, which included representatives of 17 parties and organizations. Pashinyan himself said that he was clean before the people.
