Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu. This was reported to RIA Novosti by a source in the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The interlocutor confirmed that the ministers held negotiations, noting that the discussion took place “in the interests of an early ceasefire in accordance with the Moscow statement of October 10 this year.”
On November 7, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a telephone conversation and discussed the development of events in Nagorno-Karabakh. The heads of state confirmed their mutual readiness to interact to achieve a peaceful solution to the conflict in the region.
On October 26, a ceasefire came into force in Nagorno-Karabakh. The corresponding agreements were reached by Azerbaijan and Armenia with the mediation of the United States. The third truce began at 08:00 local time (07:00 Moscow time), but soon the sides accused each other of violating the silence and continued to fight.
In 1991, Nagorno-Karabakh, the majority of whose population were Armenians, declared independence from Azerbaijan. Baku tried to return the region by force, a war broke out. In 1994, Azerbaijan, Armenia and the unrecognized NKR signed a truce.
