Sergey Lavrov
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh during telephone conversations with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and Armenian Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan. This is stated in a message on the website of the Russian department.
“During the talks, the need to strictly adhere to the provisions of the Moscow Statement of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia dated October 10, 2020, providing for a ceasefire for humanitarian purposes, was emphasized. The importance of the agreement reached in Moscow on the start of substantive negotiations with the aim of an early achievement of a peaceful settlement based on basic principles through the mediation of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs was reaffirmed, ”the message says.
The text also states that Lavrov emphasized the continuing relevance of the statement by the presidents of Russia, the United States and France on Nagorno-Karabakh.
Earlier, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan expressed the hope that Russia will take more effective measures to suppress the offensive actions of Azerbaijan and Turkey in the region than diplomatic mediation, and other mediating countries in resolving the Karabakh issue – the United States and France – will support her.
The hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh have been going on since September 27, when Azerbaijan announced the beginning of a counter-offensive operation in response to enemy shelling and brought its troops into the territory of the unrecognized republic. Armenia, participating in them as a guarantor of the NKR's security, announced on the second day that its territory was also subjected to shelling, and also indicated that Turkey had intervened in the conflict. Ankara and Baku have denied this for a long time. On October 10, the parties, with the mediation of Moscow, concluded a truce, but they broke it almost immediately.
