Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov commented on the new date for Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, named by Politico, and accused the Western media of escalating the situation in the region. His statement was made at a press conference following talks with his Italian counterpart Luigi Di Maio.
“On February 20, our exercises [with Belarus] are ending, as announced. Will the escalation end? I don’t know, we are not inflating it,” the minister said.
The joint Russian-Belarusian exercise “Allied Resolve-2022” started in Belarus on February 10. According to Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, the servicemen are practicing confrontation with the forces of Poland, the Baltic States and Ukraine.
On February 3, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced more than 20 joint events between the two countries this year. The previous major joint Russian-Belarusian exercise, Zapad-2021, took place in September 2021.
