Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov disagreed with Elon Musk on the issue that AI will replace simultaneous interpreters in the near future. He voiced this opinion during the “New Knowledge” marathon, which takes place on May 20-22.
According to RIA Novosti, Elon Musk spoke at the conference via video link. Among other topics, the founder and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX noted that a robot could replace translators in the near future.
Lavrov disagreed with this. He also told the story of the beginning of his career. Recall that the current foreign minister in the 70s worked as a translator in Sri Lanka.
“An interpreter can, if he is also a good diplomat, but at the highest level only such people work, and smooth out some of the speaker's flaws,” Lavrov stressed.
He noted that intonation plays an important role in translation, which a machine can never reproduce. “Translation is creativity,” the minister concluded, specifying that a robot can never replace a person in this path.
Previously, Rambler reported that the founder of Tesla, Elon Musk, will be able to communicate with members of the Russian government during the New Knowledge forum.
It will be attended by prominent businessmen, top-managers, bankers and members of the government of the Russian Federation.
