Nobody is going to occupy Ukraine, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. He is quoted by TASS.

He also stressed that Russia is interested in the fact that the people of Ukraine were independent, the authorities were representative.

Earlier, Lavrov said that Russia could not remain indifferent to the direct appeals of the heads of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR) for military assistance. According to him, Moscow could not but help the republics “in the fight against the aggressor.”

On Thursday, February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation to protect Donbass. He announced this during an appeal to fellow citizens. Putin has also turned to outside forces that might try to pose a threat to Russia. According to him, Russia's response will be immediate.
