“Language is a living organism”: the philologist explained where the regional neologisms come from Mira Bergelson noted that the language is constantly evolving.

Analysts from Yandex together with experts from the Institute of the Russian Language. V.V. Vinogradov compiled a list of dialect words from different regions of Russia.

Professor of the School of Philology at the Higher School of Economics Mira Bergelson on the air of Radio Komsomolskaya Pravda (radiokp.ru) explained whether these are neologisms or dialectisms.

“These are neologisms that were born in the regions, if they remain in the language, they will become dialectisms. Or maybe later they will be transferred to the national fund. In any case, this project is a wonderful example of how Yandex technologies, applied to such a traditional field as dialectology, give such an interesting result.

In addition, it shows how the inhabitants of our large and diverse country are passionate about the Russian language, ”explained the philologist.

She noted that this is not at all a simplification of the language, but its development.

“Language is a living organism. These same neologisms arise from the fact that some kind of joke was brought, the meme appeared on the Internet. Or maybe there are borrowings among these words. Or maybe it’s just a contact option, ”said the professor.

According to her, borrowings from language to language have always occurred.

“The Russian language has such a rich morphological tool, that is, all sorts of suffixes, prefixes, that it kind of processes it,” said Bergelson.
