British princes William and Harry have blamed the BBC and journalists for the death of their mother, Princess Diana. The circumstances of the car accident that took the life of the favorite of the nation, and the scandalous divorce that preceded it, are again discussed after the publication of an investigation into the circumstances of the famous interview that Lady Dee gave on the eve of her divorce from Prince Charles.
In 1995, in the Panorama program, Diana confessed to the journalist Martin Bashir that Prince Charles had betrayed him and announced that she was breaking up with him.
“There were three of us,” Diana said, referring to the romance between Charles and his longtime lover Camilla Parker-Bowles.
A year later, Charles and Diana divorced, and a year later – on August 31, 1997 – Lady Dee died in a car accident in Paris.
After that, Diana's fans started talking about the fact that it was the scandalous interview with Bashir that launched a series of tragic events and, first of all, led to the royal divorce.
According to an investigation by the British television network ITV late last year, Martin Bashir tricked Diana into an interview, providing her with fake materials confirming her surveillance, as well as telling about Charles's romance with the princes' nanny Tiggy Legg-Burke. The journalist, telling the princess terrible, but at the same time fictional stories, thus tried to win her favor and bring Lady Dee to frankness, writes The Sun.
Next, the BBC organized its own investigation. The conclusions published the other day completely coincided and confirmed the information provided by ITV. It turned out that the journalist had submitted fake surveillance documents to the channel's management. However, when the fraud was revealed, no sanctions were imposed on Bashir.
Prince William condemned the actions of Martin Bashir and the BBC, saying that the journalist's deception increased Diana's fears and fueled her paranoia.
– I believe that the deceptive way in which this interview was achieved influenced what my mother said in it. This interview played a big role in the deterioration of relations between my parents and brought pain to countless people, – said Prince William in his televised address. – I am unimaginably sad to realize that the mistakes that were made by the BBC, to a large extent contributed to the development of her fears, paranoia and isolation, which I remember at the end of her life. But what saddens me most is the fact that if the BBC had properly investigated all the complaints and concerns raised in 1995, my mother might have found out that she had been deceived. She was let down not only by the fraudulent journalist, but also by the management of the TV company, which kept silent when it was necessary to ask leading questions.
Prince Harry also voiced his position, noting that Princess Diana was an incredibly honest and brave woman.
“This was the first step towards justice and truth,” said the prince. – Nevertheless, it worries me that such tricks of journalists are widespread today.
