At least 75% of members of Congress support the relief package.
Majorities of Republicans and Democrats in both houses of Congress The United States supports the provision of assistance to Ukraine in 2024. However, disputes continue on other issues.
This was stated by former US Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker in an article by the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA).
At least 75% of members of Congress support the relief package, he said. Additionally, most Republicans and Democrats agree that aid to Ukraine is in the U.S. national interest.
However, Volker notes, controversy has arisen over how to deal with illegal immigration from across the southern US border. In December, an average of more than 7,000 migrants crossed the administrative borders per day, for a total of 225 thousand – this is the highest monthly figure in more than 20 years. And this figure is only those who passed the test. This has led to serious crises in US border states such as Texas and Arizona, but also in major cities throughout the country.
“Another complicating factor was the lack of agreement on an overall federal budget for 2024, independent of, but much larger than, an additional spending package for Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan and the US southern border,” the publication said.
It said the initial set of budget deadlines would have started in mid-January and early February, but the pressure temporarily eased after Congress agreed to an overall spending “cap” for 2024 and moved the deadlines to March. This will allow lawmakers to focus on the southern border issue, which will unblock the overall additional spending bill.
“Three U.S. senators—a Republican, a Democrat and an independent—are negotiating a compromise deal on border spending and policy. They say they have made significant progress, but some issues still remain. They must be resolved in over the next week or two, but this is a complex political fight with high stakes,” the publication says.
According to him, after the agreement is approved in the Senate, there will still be bargaining in the House of Representatives. But the package must be put to a vote in both chambers and receive majority support. This will unlock aid to Ukraine and Israel.
As reported, The US has officially suspended aid to Ukraine. This will continue until the US Congress approves new funding. Washington provided the last military aid package that had enough money. We are talking about the allocation of $250 million, which was announced on December 27, 2023.
Previously, US President Joe Biden, after concluding an agreement on funding the government in 2024 called on Republicans in Congress to approve additional funding. We are talking about more than 60 billions of dollars to help Ukraine.
