Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov commented on the statement of American leader Donald Trump on the progress in the negotiations on Karabakh. RIA Novosti reports.
“We don't know yet,” a Kremlin spokesman said when asked if Russia agrees with the assessment of the head of the White House.
Earlier on October 23, Trump announced “very good progress” in the negotiations on Nagorno-Karabakh with the participation of the American side. He also said that he participates in the settlement of the conflict, but did not say whether he personally communicated with representatives of the Armenian state. The heads of the foreign ministries of Armenia and Azerbaijan are now in Washington, and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo acts as a mediator between them.
On October 22, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow takes a position on the Karabakh conflict that would allow it to enjoy the confidence of both sides.
Armed clashes in Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) began on September 27. Yerevan and Baku accused each other of escalating the conflict. According to some reports, mercenaries from Syria are participating in the hostilities on the side of Azerbaijan.
In 1991, Nagorno-Karabakh, the majority of whose population were Armenians, declared independence from Azerbaijan. Baku tried to return the region by force, after which a war broke out. In 1994, Azerbaijan, Armenia and the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR), mediated by Russia, signed a truce protocol, but hostilities are periodically resumed.
