Kosovo Assembly fails to elect speaker after 42nd attempt

The meeting took place on the evening of July 5 after a break caused by a report of a bomb in the building. However, even so, the deputies were unable to elect the speaker of parliament and his deputies. This was already the 42nd attempt.

Police suspect that the bomb threat was made by a number registered in Serbia. The case is under active investigation, with cybersecurity units involved. According to prosecutor Zeynuli Gashi, an unknown man with an English accent made the bomb threat over the phone.

Despite the recent decision of the Constitutional Court, which obliges the formation of the parliamentary leadership within 30 days, the situation remains deadlocked. Representatives of the parties interpret this decision differently.

Kosovo's president has so far refrained from dissolving parliament, although she formally has the authority to do so. She fears an even greater political crisis.
