The medical staff, to whom the Danish national soccer player Christian Eriksen owes his life, and captain Simon Kjaer have received the so-called UEFA President's Award for their speedy intervention. The European Football Union announced on Tuesday.

Eriksen collapsed on the lawn on June 12 in Copenhagen during the European Championship group game against Finland and had to be resuscitated. The quick action of the doctors saved Eriksen from death. Kjaer had previously reacted quickly on the lawn and recognized the seriousness of the situation.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin described the nine winners as the “real heroes of the European Championship”. Eriksen was meanwhile used a defibrillator. This recognizes cardiac arrhythmias and triggers shocks in an emergency.

It is unclear whether Eriksen will be on the field for champions Inter Milan in the near future. His contract runs until the summer of 2024. Eriksen cannot play with the implanted defibrillator in Italy because there are much stricter rules in this regard than in other European leagues.
